The Stanley Cup Playoffs have arrived! The puck drops for the primary round of the playoffs on August 12th, and while it’d be four months later than expected, it’s better than nothing!
The NHL bound up the qualifying round over the weekend and that we have the bracket set for the playoffs. The Colorado Avalanche claimed the No. 2 seed within the Western Conference in round robin play, while the Arizona Coyotes upset the Nashville Predators within the qualifying round to say the No. 7 seed.
The Avalanche had the runner-up record within the Western Conference, finishing second to the St. Louis Blues within the Central division. Colorado beat St. Louis and Dallas in round robin play, but lost 4-3 in overtime to Vegas to come short of the highest seed. Philipp Grubauer ended up getting two games in goal during the round robin schedule, and had a 2.45 GAA and .914 save percentage. Nathan MacKinnon led the team with a goal and two assists.
The Coyotes were the 11th seed within the Western Conference qualifying round. They were four games under .500 when play was suspended in March and facing the 6th seeded Nashville Predators. After splitting the primary two games, the Coyotes won subsequent two to win the series 3-1. Goalie Darcy Kuemper was key, starting all four games and abandoning 2.77 goals per game while posting a .933 save percentage.
